1. Fairtrade Fortnight round up
On behalf of the Soroptimists, Christian Aid and the Carlisle Fairtrade Group, a Big Thank You for all the support you gave by volunteering at and attending the Fairtrade Coffee mornings and Black Gold film night that took place as part of this year's Fairtrade Fortnight. Special thanks to Carlisle's new Fairtrade Champion, Cllr, Jacqueline Geddes, who baked a number of items for the coffee morning on 8th March and contributed a cake towards a raffle that was held. Don't forget that you can borrow the giant Fairtrade Snakes and Ladders game (free (or a small donation) to COWC supporters) which was played and enjoyed at all of the Fairtrade Saturday events. Just call the centre to arrange collection.
We have received a message from the Cumbria Fairtrade Group to congratulate its coordinator, Joe Human, on his Community Champions Award as described in the attached newspaper articles. This is a national award which he received in Liverpool last week and is most deserved! Well done Joe from Carlisle One World Centre and the Carlisle Fairtrade City Group! The article is attached.
For those who attended the Black Gold event, the weblink http://www.blackgoldmovie.com/action.php gives some ideas for following up with campaigning and other means. You can also get involved with the Carlisle Fairtrade Group - contact Lorna Strong at the World Shop for more information (550385 or lorna.strong@carlisleworldshop.co.uk).
2. International Women's Day 2008
Of the billions of people who
live on less than $1 a day, 70% are women and girls. It was International
Women’s Day on 8 March, and Oxfam is sharing stories of women around the
world who are fighting against poverty.
