1. Amnesty Meeting - Arms Trade Treaty
The February meeting of the Carlisle Amnesty group will be looking
at Amnesty�s renewed national focus
on a possible Arms Trade Treaty. www.amnesty.org.uk/uploads/documents/doc_22181.pdf
Dave Plumb, the north west trainer for Amnesty UK has agreed to come to
their meeting this Wednesday 8th February to give us more information
about this campaign. If you are interested in attending contact Hazel
Phillips on [email protected]. The meeting usually takes place
at COWC at 7pm on the second Wednesday of the month. If there is a high
level of interest the group may move to a nearby larger venue.
2. Keswick Film Festival - 2 films of interest
This year the Keswick Film Festival will include two films with
speakers which focus on themes which have concerned the Keswick Peace
and Human Rights Group: child detention and the treatment of the Kurdish
minority in Turkey. See the attached poster for more info on 2 films on
the 25th and 26th February.
3. Fairtrade Fortnight in Carlisle
Carlisle Fairtrade Group are organising a number of events which we
hope you will enjoy. It promises to be a fun and vibrant Fairtrade
Fortnight! You can also keep up to date on Fairtrade activities in
Carlisle at www.carlislefairtrade.org.uk
The theme for this years Fairtrade Fortnight campaign is �Take as step
for Fairtrade�. It can be a simple step like swapping your tea, coffee
or chocolate to Fairtrade. Every step counts for millions of farm�ers,
workers and their communities in developing countries who urgently need
a better deal from trade. You can register your step online at http://step.fairtrade.org.uk/
So here�s what�s going on:
Malawi Evening
Wednesday 29 February at 7.30pm to 9pm at Church of Scotland
Guest speaker will be Francis Chisuse, representative of small holder
Fair�trade tea growers in Malawi. All welcome. Poster attached.
Fairtrade Schools Conference
Thursday 1 March at James Rennie School, Carlisle
Pupils will take part in a wide range of workshops and learn about many
aspects of Fairtrade.
Fairtrade Coffee Morning
Saturday 3 March from 10am to 12pm
Old Town Hall, Carlisle City Centre
Shoppers and visitors can enjoy a Fairtrade tea or coffee with delicious
home made baking made with Fairtrade & Local ingredients.
Christian Aid Coffee Morning
Saturday 10 March 10am to 12pm
Old Town Hall, Carlisle City Centre
There will be Fairtrade tea and coffee served and a Fairtrade stall
will be available. Poster attached.
Cumbria Fairtrade Network Annual General Meeting
Saturday 10 March from 9.30am to 3pm
Network members will be meeting in Ambleside Parish Centre for a round
up on the activities of Cumbria�s Fairtrade Groups and an update on the
Cum�bria Local & Fair Conference.
